A No-Stress Mini Guide for Elopements, Military Couples & Simple Ceremonies
If your goal is legal, simple, and fast, Virginia is one of the easiest states to get married in.
· No waiting period
· No residency requirement
· No pressure to make it a “big wedding”
This guide walks you through the exact steps to be legally married in Virginia — without the overwhelm.
Step 1: Get Your Virginia Marriage License
You and your partner must apply together at any Virginia Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
What to bring:
• Valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport)
• Social Security numbers (card not required)
• Payment for the license fee ($30 at time of posting)
Good to know:
• No blood test
• No waiting period
• License is issued the same day
⏱ Time required: 15–30 minutes
Step 2: Know the License Rules (Important)
• Your license is valid for 60 days
• You can get married anywhere in Virginia
• Your officiant must be authorized by the court
Once you have the license in hand, you’re legally cleared to marry.
Step 3: Choose an Authorized Officiant
Virginia requires that your officiant be court-authorized.
This can be:
• A Marriage Commissioner
• A minister approved by the court
Please note: A friend or family member cannot legally officiate unless approved by the court in advance.
If speed matters, choosing a licensed Marriage Commissioner is the fastest route.
Step 4: Decide Where Your Ceremony Will Happen
Your ceremony can be:

• At a private location
• At a small chapel
• Outdoors
• At a venue
• Even in your living room
Virginia does not require witnesses. This means you can truly keep it simple.
Step 5: Have the Ceremony
Your ceremony can be:
• 5 minutes or 30
• Traditional or non-traditional
• With vows or without
The only legal requirement is that you:
• State your intent to marry
• Are pronounced legally married
Everything else is optional.
Step 6: License Is Filed (You’re Married!)
After the ceremony:
• Your officiant files the completed license with the court
• The court records your marriage
• You can request certified copies for:
• Name change
• Military records
• Insurance
• Legal documentation
Once it’s filed — you’re officially married.
Common Reasons Couples Choose This Route
• Military timelines
• Insurance or benefits
• Private, meaningful moments
• Avoiding wedding pressure
• “We just want to be married” energy
All are valid. All are welcome.
